What the demo carries over

The free demo went live on 24 September 2026 on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and runs from the start of the story to the end of the opening Witherwood events. Story progress, items and gold do not transfer to the full game, but you may carry up to eight monsters across — rank G and F only, taken from your main party and reserves. Transferred monsters arrive at level 1 with their talents reset to their defaults, and only if you played the demo on the same platform and account.

How recruiting works

There are three routes. Show of Force is the classic one: fight a monster and try to befriend it mid-battle, and a defeated enemy may occasionally volunteer on its own. Quick Scouting is new — target a monster while exploring, throw meat at it, and your party performs a Show of Force on the spot with no battle at all; finer cuts persuade more easily, and some monsters want the unusual varieties. The Scout Run then opens at the Witherwood paddock, stocking rare monsters found nowhere in the wild and recruitable only by Quick Scouting, using a quota of Scouty Snacks. Square Enix has said no experience with earlier DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS games is needed to start this one.

How synthesis works

Combine two monsters — both at level 10 or above — and the result is a stronger child that can inherit its parents' talents. Every monster belongs to a family and sits at one of nine ranks from G up to X, and repeated synthesis raises a Plus Value that can push a child to a higher rank than either parent. That is how a rank-G catch becomes a keeper.

Parties, battles and the Wrangler's Spirit

Up to four monsters are active in battle with four more in reserve. You can issue direct orders or hand a monster a general strategy to follow. Bianca and Nera each have a Wrangler's Spirit usable once per battle — Bianca's heals HP and boosts attack power, Nera's restores MP and raises defence. Online Joint Battles take up to four players against large monsters, and there is PvP online as well.
